If you look at my minor league roster, you'll see that I have a plethora of starting pitching, including a lot with quite a bit of talent waiting to mature. However, my major league roster only has two starters (with Chad Gomez coming off the DL in the first month of the season).
The way the schedule is, I really only need four starters for the first month of the season, but I don't have four starters. I want to win this year (pay attention, Will and Matt!) but I don't think that any of the fifty-five or so minor league starters/prospects are ready to be a #3 pitcher in the bigs.
So, I'd like to trade for one. I'll trade one, or two of my pitching prospects for a good, young, cheap major-league-tested starter. I realize that such a beast is a rare commodity, but I'm willing to double your investment: trade me one of your good young pitchers, and get up to two of mine!
