Well, after some testing over the weekend, and learning from experiences in the SDMB League, here's the plan for the 2004-05 OEL offseason. In short, we are going to upgrade to OOTP 9 for the 2005 season. Unfortunately, we have to complete most of the offseason in version 6.5 before we can upgrade.
For those of you who do not have version 9 of the game, here's a website where you can download it. I think it's only $30, which is a pretty good deal for your entertainment dollar, even in today's economy. Everyone probably should go ahead and get it now, even though we won't be using it for a few weeks, just to get it up and running. Make sure your game is updated to the latest version (9.2.2).
Tonight I'm going to roll the sim over to the 2005 season. So, get any last minute contract offers or roster moves in today.
The only task it appears that we can cleanly skip in the version 6.5 offseason is the coach signings. The coaching system in 9 is different enough that nothing carries over. So, there's no point to signing coaches. I'm going to sim through those five days tonight.
Where we'll start is with free agency and the amateur draft. Unfortunately, we can't move the amateur draft into version 9 (without massive work for the commissioners, and I don't want to spend hours on it just to move the draft into version 9). Also, it appears that it is cheaper to sign free agents in 6.5 than in 9, based on an ad hoc review by me during my testing. So, we'll do those two tasks together in the same way we've done them in the past. I'll post a schedule today or tonight on the league web site, but you can expect Day 1 of free agency to be Wednesday. Nate's running the sims for free agency and the amateur draft.
After free agency and the amateur draft, we'll have to do the Rule 5 draft and Spring Training in version 6.5. Those will also be run by me and done the same as in the past.
Finally, after Spring Training is done, I'll roll the game into OOTP 9. We'll give everyone probably a quick sim or two to acclimate themselves to the changes, and then jump right into the regular season.
If you have any questions, you can either post them in the comments or email Nate and me.

Are we going to do anything to get comparable coaches in OOTP 9, or just letting it go like we did in the SDMB league?
Bring on the new season! Two comments -
1. For those who have no experience with version 9, the history for all minor league players is lost in the comversion (unless Mack figured out a way to prevent that).
2. Nate, would it be possible for you to devote a portion of the web site to preserve the history of the 6.5 version of this league (similar to what Zev did in the other league)? That would solve the minor league history issue and provide a good resource.
Jeremy: No changes to coaches in version 9. You gets what you gets.
Matt: I looked, but the "off-label" application to preserve history doesn't appear to be available any more. Nate and I will figure out a way to preserve the almanac for the 2001-2004 seasons and make it available.
With the coaches being randomly assigned, I would like to ask about when the salaries are taken for coaches in 6.5. Someone mentioned that they were taken at the begining of the season. Does that mean on April 1st, or on Jan 1st when we switch over to the new seasons. As someone in this league that has a good deal of money tied up in the coaches, I would like to make sure that the salaries are not taken out before we switch over to 9 if we are going to get a new random set of coaches at that point.
One suggestion on the schedule - from experience with version 6.5, I feel it's important to have Day 2 as a standalone sim. It's often the first couple of days that are critical for getting the offers in and getting a feel in you're in the ballpark for a FA. Either group together a couple of more days later, or (if Nate's willing) sim day 2 on the 1st and day 3 on the 2nd.
Just my 2 cents.
Jeremy: Their should be no cash impact in 2005 from your coaching staff.
Paul: I'll leave you suggestion to Nate's consideration, since I know how much of a pain it is to be the commissioner tasked with free agency. But, given the deep crop of free agents this year, your suggestion makes sense to me.
Me, too. So I'll stretch the early parts out and consider how to compress the later days.
For coaches: in OOTP9 coaches are paid by the day just the same as players. So it will be an ongoing process.
