Chnages are afoot in the OEL League as the calendar nears the end of May. Hegel leader Jersey City went 1-3 and second-place Helena used a five-game winning streak to reclaim the division lead. Defending champion Marietta has established sole possession of third place, looking to chase down the Jersey City/Helena combination for a playoff berth.
Meanwhile, Kant leader Seattle dropped four games in a row and saw the Ministry's lead slashed in half, to 2.5 games, over the Mighty Mighty Pisces. The rest of the division continues to toil in below-.500 obscurity, although the Silva Black Bears' four-game winning streak has narrowed the gap.
A few players were injured, but are day-to-day. Aren't we all?
Silva's Pedro Diaz threw a two-hit, complete game shutout of Marietta on May 30. Diaz walked only two while striking out ten in a dominating performance.
Brooklyn's Tyler Conn (this correspondent's pick for the top prospect in the game), made his major league debut on May 27 in impressive fashion. He went eight innings, giving up five hits, two walks and only two wins while striking out six. Brooklyn
held on for a 4-3 victory over Maryland.
Meanwhile, in other prospect news, Baseball America's top rated prospect, Cairo's James Pilla, is 7-0 with an ERA under two in AA. Will he see AAA soon?
Donald Mansfield of Stockholm and Albert Ramer of Marietta picked up Player of the Week honors for the week ending May 28.
Helena's Tomas Folch became the OEL's first eight-game winner, in a 4-0 victory over Cairo.
In other notable games:
Brooklyn and Maryland went 12 innings on May 26. Brooklyn scored two in the top of the 12th, but Maryland came back with three in the bottom of the frame to win 8-7.
Helena and Marietta also posted 10-inning wins that day on the road over Cairo and Seattle, respectively. The extra-inning loss to Marietta stopped Seattle's eight-game winning streak. The Ministry was apparently demoralized as they got blown out the next day 10-1 by Marietta.
Brooklyn and Pittsburgh each claimed 11-inning victories on May 28.
On May 29, Pittsburgh thumped Winnipeg 12-3 while Sylva scored one in the 11th and one in the 12th to top Jersey City. Both Marietta and New York spun shutouts of Seattle and Stockholm, extending the Hegel's dominance over Kant.
On May 30, Cairo took a 1-0 pitcher's duel over Winnipeg and Helena came back from a 6-2 deficit with five runs in the last three innings to beat Pittsburgh 7-6.
