Rating of 1 bug
I remember from past discussion that there's a bug in OOTP6.5 regarding prospects with a 1 rating in a skill, and no matter how much coaching they get, they can't improve the 1 (whereas a 2 rating will improve.)
Well, I have a 4-star prospect (William Tyler) with a 1 rating of control in the game (on the web, he has an 8 talent rating for control). His K/BB ratio, while not stellar, is definitely in line with a greater-than-1 rating.
So, I'm asking two things. Can anyone confirm for me that this is a known bug, and, does anyone mind if I petition Nate/Mack to bump the 1 up to a 2?
Thanks, guys!

A couple of other notes.
1. You will all notice a large number of trades having been processed. In an effort to get the draft to run more smoothly, I reset the draft order to the correct order. But, that meant that I had to erase the traded draft picks file. That, in turn, meant that I needed to move all the draft picks moved last year. So, a large series of trades of scrubs followed. Hopefully, I got everything right. (Compare it to my April 22 blog entry listing the trades to that point. I fixed one mistake, as said in the comments to that blog entry, when I went back through my emails to process the trades. The only one that I think came out wrong is the recent trade between Pittsburgh and Sylva. I think Sylva got my 2nd round pick rather than the pick I had earlier acquired from Stockholm.
2. In an effort to reduce the size of the game file, and the time spent unzipping it, we've removed the almanacs from the game file. The almanacs don't affect the game play at all, so it shouldn't cause any problems. If you do have problems downloading and using the game file, let me know.
3. We're also experimenting with an even smaller game file ("League File - Light"), but that's not really working yet, so ignore that link.
4. The almanacs are now a separate zip file. If you want to add them to the game file, just download them and unzip them inside the OEL.lg folder.
The main league file is updated and ready for downloads. The web pages are en route. See y'all on Monday.

Sylva Cuts Payroll Now What Happens?
Well payroll has been cut to where I will have some available cash on hand. The big question around the offices is what's next? Do we continue to cut the payroll and flat our rebuild or add a player or two that can help the club?
Here is the plan I am going to use for the season, REBUILD! I sent away some good players so now the feel is were a less than a .500 team. So as of today anyone with a salary of 2 million a year or more can be available.
Prospects and picks are needed. Prospects must be ready to step in and start for the ballclub. Picks I am looking for are 1st and 2nd round picks. Cash in any deal would help out as well.
The fans here might be upset with the moves but we had little choice. But give us two years and we will be back in the playoffs.
Email me at jasonk71@zenbe.com to talk deals.

Sylva Sheds a Salary
As the Black Bears attempt to get their team in the black, GM Jason Krausert has made another deal to shed some salary.
They have dealt starting RF Benito Figueredo to the World Series runner-up Brooklyn Bombers along with his $5.24M contract and their 5th round pick in the upcoming draft for AAA LF prospect Tony Valle and $1M in cold hard cash.
"This move really helps us get some money so I can sign some coaches," said Jason, "I really don't know how we could be $5M in the red to start this season...who the hell was making the decisions on this team before I got here last season."
Bombers GM Jeremy Goldman refused to comment because he knew that the former GM for Sylva was his father and he did not want to go there.
This move will fill in the hole in the OF that was vacated by now Free Agent Donald Mansfield. "I think we got a better player for over $2M less than we offered that prick [Mansfield]," quipped Brooklyn GM Goldman, "We are all better off for how this went down."

Pittsburgh Again Reaches Out
Hearing the wails of another distressed owner, Pittsburgh has again swooped in to rescue a team from bankruptcy. The Pisces agreed to take back outcast SP Oscar Leon (accompanied by prospect SP Harold Deutsch) in exchange for an 8th round pick in the upcoming draft, $1.5 million, and hot prospect catcher James Morones.
"It's just a situation where we have to give until it hurts," said Owner/GM Mack Shultz at his second press conference in a ten-minute period. "And now, it might hurt a bit."
Once again, the player obtained by Pittsburgh is a free agent at the end of the year. Whispers surround the Pisces' front office, but nobody seems to know what Shultz will do next. "Heck," he said, "I'm not even sure what I'm going to do."

Pittsburgh's Generosity Aids Sylva in Its Time of Need
Responding to Sylva's pleas for help, Pittsburgh stepped up to ease the financial crunch facing the Black Bears. Recklessly endangering the Pisces' own fiscal well-being, the following trade was struck:
Pittsburgh sent to Sylva SP Donald Mines, OF Brian Caraway, C Jose Valdes, Stockholm's second round pick in the upcoming draft (acquired in a trade last season), and $4 million in cash.
In exchange, Sylva sent the following players to the Steel City: SP Robert "Crackpot" Gaertner, OF Perry Hodgin, C James Dominy, and Sylva's 1st and 3rd round picks in the upcoming draft.
In all, the trade should provide approximately $12 million of salary relief to Sylva. "When we heard the cries ring out, we just had to rush to their aid," said Pisces Owner/GM Mack Shultz. "It's an occasion where you have to put competitive desires aside and lend a hand."
It's notable that all three players acquired from Sylva will be free agents at the end of the year. Does this mean that the Pisces plan to make a playoff push after a year in the hinterlands, or will they be looking to deal the players to established contenders? Only time will tell.

Sylva Looking To Cut Payroll..
Hello all, been awhile since I posted here. :( Anyways my club is in a financial mess. I need to trade some higher priced players to break even to start the season. There might be a deal in place with Pittsburgh but I still need to shed say 4 to 6 million dollars.
If anyone has interest please message me, either here or best way via email.
My email is jasonk71@gmail.com
Thanks,

OEL Series Game Seven! Maryland Wins!
Finally, it came to this...Maryland against Brooklyn at Brooklyn for the 2003 OEL Championship.
And it was Maryland, my Maryland, that won it all.
It looked good for the Bombers as the scored one in the bottom of the first on Oscar Woodworth's leadoff double and eventual run on a sac fly by 2B Tikanao.
But it wasn't too be. That run was all that Brooklyn was destined to score tonight as Maryland drove in three in the top of the third on a home run by third sacker John Dickerman and timely hitting by Villa, Ruiz, and Hernandez. Maryland scored a fourth run in the top of the seventh and that was all she wrote! We have our champion! Our third in three years!
Congratulations to Will Taylor for his triumph and condolences to Jeremy Goldman for his loss. At least you had the trophy for a year, Jeremy!
Mack will take care of the season rollover either tomorrow night or during the weekend. I'll let him speak to that. Final free agent offers should be in before that time.
Also, if anyone is thinking of not participating next season please tell us now. And if anyone knows someone to take over Winnipeg please have them contact Mack or I.
Best to all and I'll see you in 2004!

Bomber Bats Extend Series to Game Seven
It's all coming down to one game as the Brooklyn hitters stepped up with 14 hits in a 8-3 victory over Maryland. The Bombers host the Poedamnedmonium tomorrow in a game for the title.
Brooklyn never trailed in the game, striking first with three runs in the bottom of the third. Antonio Alicea's RBI double was followed by a two-run home run by Miyatarou Takenao. When Maryland got one of the runs back on three hits in the fourth, Brooklyn immediately responded with an Alicea RBI single.
The score remained 4-1 until the seventh inning. Maryland scored two runs on an RBI double by pinchhitter Franky Gingras and a RBI single by Leo Villa. But, Brooklyn reliever James Coddington put out the fire with a double play grounder off the bat of Gonzalo Abarca.
Once again, the Bomber bats came through in the bottom of the seventh, putting the game away with a four-spot. Pio Pastrana hit a two-run jack to deep left field. Pinchhitter Benicio Peneda had an RBI single. Alicea then closed out the scoring with a bases-loaded walk. Maryland never again threatened, going down in order in the eighth and ninth innings.
Antonio Alicea, who played a key role in all three of Brooklyn's scoring innings, took home game MVP honors.
The game file is uploaded and web pages are en route. Game seven will be simmed tomorrow night by Nate. After the sim, watch for updates as to the final opportunity to extent contract offers or release players, and the schedule for 2004.
Good luck to both Will and Jeremy tomorrow.

OEL Series Game Five: A Pitcher's Duel Leaves Brooklyn Alive!
Another great game in the books for the 2003 OEL series, sports fans! Brooklyn defeated Maryland in game five 3-0 in a game in which Brooklyn only had five hits and Maryland only four! A tight, old fashioned pitcher's duel for a change!
Brooklyn starter Tyler Conn went the full nine innings on the shutout running up a game score of 83 by allowing only four hits and one walk on the game. Maryland's Punal, starting for the southerners, allowed only four hits and NO walks while striking out nine. Sadly, Brooklyn bunched them up and scored three runs, two in the second and one in the third to bring the series back to Brooklyn with Maryland leading 3 games to 2!
It's still anybodies series! Who will win and who will lose? Only fate knows, and she ain't talking!
I have simmed the off day following game five so tomorrow's sim by Mack is only the game.
Files and site are on the way up! Don't miss the exciting conclusion!

Game Four: Brooklyn Pushed to the Brink
Maryland continued its fairy tale run with a 6-4 victory over Brooklyn. Will they be able to carry the magic to the title? They're just one win away!
The Poedamnedmonium took the lead with a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth, chasing Bomber starter Mark Fossum from the game. Brooklyn had lived up to its name with two solo home runs in the top of the frame, taking a 2-0 lead. Ronald Hernandez tied the game with a two-run bomb of hiw own in the pivotal fourth. The PDM just kept on hitting with a two-run double by John Dickerman being followed by an RBI double by pitcher Quinn Shetler.
Shetler ended up going eight innings. He wobbled again in the top of the sixth, when catcher Pio Pastrama hit a two-run bomb for his second home run of the game. Pio took home Player of the Game honors for his effort. But, the Maryland hitters immediately struck back again with a solo home run by Kenneth Juarez extending the lead back to two. The scored stayed 6-4 from there as Shetler and closer Ralph Mills kept the Bombers in the park.
Maryland hosts Game 5 tomorrow with a chance to claim the title in front of their home fans. Will it happen? Will the Platonic League claim its first OEL championship? Stay tuned to Nate's sim tomorrow.

OEL Series Game Three: Maryland Hits Less, Scores More!
Game three of the 2003 OEL Series is in the books, folks, and we're seeing that these two teams are evenly matched!
In game three Brooklyn had seven hits and Maryland only six. However, Maryland managed to bunch a series of hits in the bottom of the sixth and won the game, three to one! This gives Maryland the lead in the series at two game to one.
Maryland starter Wayne Dick was chosen player of the game even in a game in which he allowed eleven baserunners in 6.2 innings! No one else stood out enough to make it happen!
Game four will be simmed by Mack on Monday night! Be there, everyone!

OEL Series Game Two: Brooklyn ties it up!
Welcome back to the greatest show on turf, baseball fans! Game two proved as exciting as one could imagine!
Brooklyn and Maryland both had seven hits in what would appear to be an even game. But Brooklyn pushed across six runs on the basis of the seven walks allowed by Maryland pitchers. Starter McGurk gave up three walks in his 4.2 innings and reliever hernandez gave up four in his 1.2 innings or work! Not good! Not good at all!
Brooklyn, on the other hand, allowed only two walks by its pitchers and dominated the second half of the game!
The standout offensive performance of the night went to Brooklyn CF Oscar Woodworth who went 2 for 4 and stole three bases in his three times on base! Well done, Oscar! Let's see more of that!
I have simmed both game two and the offday following. Game three will be simmed tomorrow night by me. Then Mack is back on Monday for game four! See you there!

OEL Series Game One: Maryland steals a road game!
Hello and welcome to game one of the 2003 OEL Series! We've got two great teams meeting up for the first time in the series tonight and it should be a barn burner!
Maryland has taken game one 7-3 in a tough one! After four blank innings on both sides Maryland broke through in the fifth with three runs, two of them driven in by pitcher Punal! That's taking care of both sides, Fabio!
Brooklyn answered with one run in the bottom of the frame but Maryland answered with one in the top of the sixth to leave the score 4-1 after six! Maryland put the game away with three more runs in the top of the eighth to steal the first game and home field advantage from the Brooklynites!
Star of the show tonight was Maryland shortstop Chris Fordyce who went 5 for 5 with two runs scored. Fordyce is batting .375 for the postseason so far!
Tomorrow's game will again be at the Brooklyn landscape and promises to be another sweetheart of a contest! Be there!

OEL Championship Series Game Six! On to the World Series!
Yes, sports fans, after a week of play the entrants for the 2003 OEL Series is now set! Brooklyn and Maryland will be meeting for the crown! Both wildcard teams are advancing to the final round of the playoffs.
In the Platonic League game Seattle got out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first with a lead off single by Zaragosa followed by a double by left fielder Veit! Maryland answered in the top of the second to tie it up with Jonah Leiva's run scoring single. Seattle went up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth only to have Maryland tie it up in the sixth and go ahead in the seventh.
In a more tense Socratic League game which included a triple play in inning two of the extra inning contest, Brooklyn was up after three innings with back to back doubles by Woodworth and McGinn. Winninpeg eventually went ahead of a two-spot in the bottom of the seventh only to have Brooklyn push one across to tie in the top of the eighth! Locked up in regulation Brooklyn won with two runs in the top of the tenth that Winnipeg could not answer!
One of our finalists is travelling in the Holy Land so the beginning of the OEL series will commence after he resumes communications. Hoepfully that will occur on Wednesday. But watch this space for updates!

Game Five's Finished and Both Series Continue!
Sorry for the delay. Forgot about my son's morning T-ball game.
In the Platonic League, Seattle jumped out to a big lead with a six-spot in the top of the second with seven singles and a walk. Maryland immediately struck back in the bottom of the frame with three runs, capped by a two run bomb to deep right-center by John Dickerman. The score then stayed at 6-3 for a long time as Seattle starter Billy Lowry settled down and the Maryland bullpen survived giving up six hits over the next five innings. Finally, Seattle put the game away in the top of the eighth inning scoring three runs on six more singles. Reliever Kenny Gonsales took over from there as Seattle cruised to a season-saving 9-3 victory. The Ministry accumulated 21 hits, 20 of them singles. Maryland still leads three games to two and the series returns to Seattle.
In the Socratic League, youth was served as Brooklyn's young guns Tyler Conn and Steve Corner combined to hold Winnipeg to a single run on seven hits, striking out seven in the process. Brooklyn scored three in the first and another in the third to take a lead they never relinquished. The 4-1 victory gives Brooklyn a 3-2 lead in the series. However, the home team has won all five games in this series, which moves to the cozy confines of Intel Stadium in Winnipeg for the final two games.
League file's posted and the web pages are en route. I took care of the day off and Game Six in both series will be simmed Monday night by Nate. Stay tuned!

Game Four in the books! Seattle facing elimination!
We're another game deeper into the Division Series, folks, and things couldn't be more different in the two contests.
Once again it looks like the most prolific winner in the league (277 wins in the life of the OEL) is facing elimination in the playoffs with their loss today to wildcard team Maryland! Seattle got shut out by Maryland Starting Pitcher Quinn Shetler who gave up only five hits and no walks while striking out seven Seattle batters. Maryland took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, winning the game 3-0 in regulations.
In the Socratic League Brooklyn knots up the series AGAIN. Both teams had nine hits in the contest but Brooklyn turned those nine hits and one walk into four runs against Winnipeg's two-spot! Both starters went seven innings but Brooklyn eked out the slightly better performance.
What will happen tomorrow night, baseball fans? Will Seattle come back to make it a series or will they go down in defeat for a third playoff appearance in a row? And will one of Winnipeg or Brooklyn break through and open up the Socratic League playoff series? Only tomorrow night knows and it's not telling this reporter!
The file is uploading now and the next games are tomorrow night by Mack! Be there!

Games Three Completed
The home teams prevailed in game three as Maryland took a 2-1 lead in the Platonic series and Brooklyn pulled to within 2-1 in the Socratic finals.
Seattle held a promising 4-1 lead as the game entered the bottom of the seventh. However, starter Devin Largent gave up two runs in the seventh and Maryland scored again in the eighth to tie the game at four runs apiece. In the bottom on the ninth, facing Ministry closer Wesley Savage, the Poes started the ninth with a single and double to put runners at second and third with none out. Savage came back to strike two hitters out, sandwiched around an intentional walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, Maryland's second baseman Kenneth Juarez strode confidently to the plate. Unfortunately for the latte-lovers in Seattle, Savage couldn't find the strike zone against Juarez, who drew the game-winning, bases-loaded walk. Tough way to lose a game. Rightfielder Silvio Ruiz won Player of the Game honors by leading Maryland with three base hits, including the critical double in the ninth inning.
In the other game, Winnipeg never mounted much of an offensive attack as Brooklyn won 4-2. Brooklyn's Miyatarou Takenao won Player of the Game honors with three RBI, including a two-run triple. Bomber starting pitcher Trevor Fleenor held Winnipeg to two hits and one run over six innings and the bullpen barely held on, as Hal WOPR's squad put the tying runs in scoring position in the ninth inning.

Championship Round, Game Two! Winnipeg Edges Brooklyn, Seattle ties it up!
Yes, sports fans, Games Two of the Championship Round of the 2003 OEL playoffs are in the bag! And thing are moving along in dramatic fashion!
In the Platonic League we saw two powerful offenses bringing their A games to the field! Maryland put up seven runs in the game but that didn't stand as Seattle scored in each of the first seven innings to take the game 11-7. Maryland's Starting Pitcher, Wayne Dick, was roughed up early as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. His replacement, Antonio Hernandez, was better but that's a relative term. Hernandez gave up three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
The game did have some tense moments when Seattle's medical team ran on the field to the frantic motions of All Star Starter Thomas Holte. With an eventual diagnosis of a 'stiff elbow' Holte is out for the remainder of this playoff series and possibly more as he is sidelined for a week. Quite a blow to the Seattle squad should the series last until games five or six!
In the Socratic League we saw Hal WOPR's Winnipeg Microchips go up two games to zero over Brooklyn with a 6-5 win. Winnipeg took the game in the sixth when, down 5-1, they put up five runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead...a lead they would never lose.
I have simmed game two and the off day following so that Mack can sim game three clean tomorrow night! Be there!

Divisional Game #1
The first game is in the books, and Pythagoras isn't looking so good.
The Maryland Poedamnedmonium shocked the Seattle Ministry of Silly Walks with a 10-0 blowout victory. Lewis McGurk combined with two relievers on a seven-hit shutout of the highest-scoring team in the OEL and took home Player of the Game honors. Leadoff hitter Leo Villa went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg manager Hal WOPR used his cutting-edge computational skills to control Brooklyn in a 5-2 victory. Striker star Reinaldo Salerno hit a three-run home run to start the scoring. Hernando DeSilva backed him up with 7.1 shutout innings to win Player of the Game. Winnipeg led 5-0 going into the ninth inning before the Bombers began hitting. Stephen Hyer hit a two-run home run with one out before Striker closer Edward Adams struck out Donald Mansfield and William Marone to end the game.
The league file is uploaded and the web pages are en route. Game Two in the two series will be played tomorrow.
